Fantasy Football Draft Tips

If you're new to Fantasy Football or a veteran, its always good to recap what a good draft strategy looks like. Here are some tips and tricks to help you draft the best team possible.

1. Review and make sure you understand your league settings.

Each league and different platforms have different scoring rules, roster sizes, position limits, ect. Point per reception is a popular format, but I have also seen .5 per reception. Or, some leagues are standard with no extras or bonuses. The way your league scores will influence which players you should prioritize.

2. Don't draft a quarterback too early

Depending on who you ask, this could be controversial, but from my experience, as well as most experts, you have to wait. QBs do usually score a lot of points, but the position runs deep. Waiting until mid rounds, like 6-7, could benefit you. For example, I drafted a QB in my league in the 7th round, and he was top 5 in points for the week.

3. Use a cheat sheet and ADP rankings

There are tons of draft resources on the internet. Usually, I use the Fantasy Pros website. Average Draft Position (ADP) can help you make informed decisions, especially if you have data from several different platforms. It helps with not reaching for a player too early and also helps you prepare for a range of players each time you pick.

4. Don't draft too many players from the same team

Teams have bye weeks; sometimes teams fall apart. If a team has a star QB and a few mid-level WRs, the QB is elevating the WR so, if he gets hurt, then the WR might not play as well.

My favorite quote regarding fantasy football says, you can't win a league with your draft, but you can lose it. Winning a league requires constant attention and week-to-week pick-ups and drops; however, if you build a nice core of players with your draft, it makes it much easier. If you draft bad, maybe you pick a few guys who are injury-prone, you are screwed from the beginning.
